Hey, everyone! It is a very exciting time in Standard right now, where we just got a brand new set and had LAIC to get a better idea of what direction the format is going to go in! Two new decks popped up in big fashion in Areceus, Dialga & Palkia-GX, as well as Lillie’s PokéDoll stall. Even with a new format, the power of AbilityZard was too great, and the consistency that it brings was too much for a lot of these new decks to handle. We also saw the addition of the Tag Call engine to the format, making it where we no longer have Welder as the only playable engine for decks. Mewtwo & Mew-GX is still an extremely powerful card and you can never count it out. We are getting a little more diversity, as well as new Trainer engines to make every deck more consistent. Fewer losses due to dead drawing and more wins based on deck building is the trend that we are heading toward and that makes me excited for the upcoming Standard format. Daytona is coming up then San Diego, which are both Standard so we are going to focus on that for now. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make Daytona but all my testing is for San Diego, which is the same format.
Biggest Takeaways from Brazil
AbilityZard is still the best way to play the deck. Green’s just isn’t good enough when you compare it to the speed of the Ability-based version--the only advantage Green’s has is that you get to play Power Plant and Reset Stamp. The issue is that with the printing of Chaotic Swell, which I believe is one of the best Stadiums right now, Power Plant loses a lot of power. Turtonator and Victini Prism really proved the strength of the deck whenever Robin was on stream. Those cards in a deck with 18 Energy are too powerful to go in any other direction with the deck.
Mewtwo & Mew-GX
With the addition of Tag Call this deck gained even more consistency. Tag Call is able to search out your attackers, as well as allows you to play Special Energy, since Guzma & Hala is able to get Rainbow or Weakness Guard Energy. Caitlyn & Cynthia can be an additional draw Supporter whenever you need to find it, and Mallow & Lana is just an amazing healing card as well as a switch affect. It is very important to have right now against decks that are trying to two-shot. Mewtwo & Mew-GX is still a powerhouse and just got an added consistency boost.
